Derek Fyfe MD, Ph.D.

Although hailing from the United Kingdom, I have a long history in Charleston, working at M.U.S.C. as a Pediatric Cardiologist from 1984 to 1994. and after moving to Atlanta, purchased a vacation home on Seabrook Island in 2005. After retiring in 2012 we moved permanently to Seabrook. I took up swimming as a hobby and in 2013 and completed the first of my Nine Low Country Splash swims.

That same year I started teaching swimming to school students attending Waterproof Inc, a small, local, all volunteer 501(c)3 organization which provides , free swim lessons for title one school children. In 2018

I became CEO and Director of this Johns Island swim program. In 2023 we taught 115 first ,second and third grade students from Mt Zion Elementary school and we are currently in the middle of this years program.

I am thrilled to join the Board of Directors of LAPS as it is has been the regional model program on which Waterproof Inc modeled itself. The need for water safety education and swimming lessons remains great for a large section of Charleston areas school system.
